Our Mission: Clarity in Complex Economic Realities
Naira Math was established to solve a critical information asymmetry in the Nigerian financial landscape. Over the past decade, rapid shifts in monetary policies, foreign exchange rate regimes, double-digit inflation, and aggressive micro-lending apps have created an environment where everyday consumers and small business owners struggle to understand the real purchasing power of their money.
Mainstream financial platforms often provide abstract economic jargon or quote nominal figures that fail to tell the true story. When a digital lending app advertises "only 4% monthly interest," many borrowers do not realize that flat charges combined with upfront origination fees translate into an annual effective rate (APR) exceeding 85%. Similarly, when commercial banks charge invisible fees on transfers, SMS notices, and card renewals, individuals lose tens of thousands of Naira every year without realizing it.
Naira Math exists to deliver free, instant, math-driven transparency. We build client-side, zero-friction financial calculators that reveal the true numbers beneath marketing promises.
Who Runs Naira Math?
Naira Math is maintained by an independent group of Nigerian software engineers, chartered accountants, and personal finance advocates based in Lagos and Abuja. Our team brings together experience across Nigerian retail banking, fintech product engineering, and macroeconomic data analysis.
Unlike commercial financial comparison engines, Naira Math does not sell customer leads to commercial banks or loan sharks. We do not require account sign-ups, phone numbers, or Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) to use our tools. Every calculation runs entirely in your web browser, ensuring complete privacy.
Our Editorial and Mathematical Methodology
Accuracy and intellectual honesty are the cornerstones of our work. Every calculator and educational article on Naira Math adheres to strict editorial standards:
- Verified Regulatory Benchmarks: Our bank fee models are calibrated directly against the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Guide to Charges by Banks, Other Financial and Non-Bank Financial Institutions, as well as current Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) and VAT directives.
- Transparent IRR Formulations: For loan cost evaluations, we avoid simplified rules of thumb. Our algorithms utilize iterative Internal Rate of Return (IRR) bisection to compute the true compound Effective Annual Rate (EIR), accounting for upfront disbursement deductions and recurring monthly servicing tariffs.
- Documented FX Datasets: Our currency depreciation tool combines verified historical CBN official auction results with documented parallel market clearing rates from January 2020 through the post-2023 FX unification era, ensuring users see the true purchasing power trajectory.
- No Conflicts of Interest: We do not accept sponsored placements that compromise our mathematical integrity. If a loan carries an APR above 40%, our tool flags it clearly, regardless of the lender's brand reputation.
How We Sustain the Project
To keep our calculators 100% free for students, entrepreneurs, civil servants, and families across all 36 states and the FCT, we display unobtrusive, contextual advertisements through Google AdSense. We do not accept pop-up ads, deceptive download buttons, or predatory loan solicitations.
